A network of microphilanthropy that supports Middlebury students.

The mission of Project: BECOMING is to create self-actualized women. Through the use of expressive modalities, such as dance, writing and discussion, we promote creative exploration. These experiences encourage an outgrowth of limitless possibilities. We increase self-esteem, social, individual and academic responsibility as well as community involvement. We hone the critical thinking skills of our participants, thereby allowing them to assess, plan and act authentically.

BECOMING Pilsen had a successful start this summer in Chicago. Our vision is to continue “BECOMING” the women we aspire to be with monthly workshops including discussion and movement. The workshops will be led by our three interns from Columbia College Chicago, a visual and performing arts institution. MiddStart will keep the project’s participants engaged through the school-year. Many of them will be moving on to high school soon. We ultimately hope to serve as many girls as possible. In order to accomplish this, we need to sustain the program and the connections we have made thus far.

As a first-generation Mexican American student and a graduate from the Chicago Public School system, I am first-handedly aware of the challenges faced by adolescents in this community. Being from an underserved community, I believe that the arts are a wonderful catalyst for bridging the gap between underserved and more privileged communities.

Each workshop will require $250. Every month the girls will address a theme or question. The monthly $250 will cover supplies, snacks and stipends for the interns, all which are dance majors and trained in the program facilitation after completing the Project: BECOMING Pilsen over the summer 2013. The workshops will run through the school year in hopes of having a summer session in 2014.
