Rachel Woods ’14
Rachel Woods was inspired to come to Middlebury for many reasons, but it was the outstanding language program and beautiful campus that won her over. As Rachel says, “what better place to tackle a pile of Russian flashcards than ensconced in a window seat in Bi-Hall watching the sun set over the Adirondacks?”

This past summer, Rachel received a competitive government stipend through the Critical Language Scholarship Program, which enabled her to study for two months in the city of Ufa—located in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan. While in Ufa, she studied Russian and conducted research about the history of Belarusians in the area for one of her Middlebury classes. This fall, she is studying at Middlebury’s School Abroad in Yaroslavl, Russia. “My Russian is still very far from perfect, but I finally feel like I can take care of myself without relying on a helpful local or even my trusty dictionary.”
When she is not engrossed in her Russian language courses, Rachel can be found baking, hiking, running, and walking. Back in Middlebury, she is fond of the Trail Around Middlebury (TAM), which she describes as “Vermont-y, especially the part that runs straight through the cow pasture.” Rachel also takes part in Middlebury’s Swing Dance Club and Sister-to-Sister, which organizes group mentoring events once a month for middle school girls.
