Middlebury Cycling Club is a student-run club devoted to growing the sport of cycling across all disciplines (road, cyclocross, mountain, and gravel) at all levels. We are striving to promote inclusivity in our sport by gathering a strong group of diverse students who have a passion for riding bikes from the beginner level all the way to the elite ranks. Our vision is to get more college students on bikes from a variety of backgrounds, work to specifically promote women’s cycling, and support community cycling efforts ranging from trail building to bike safety awareness.

We hope that MiddSTART will help us achieve our goal by removing the barriers of entry for students to begin cycling. We recognize that cycling can be a large financial commitment, and our aim is to eliminate the fiscal boundary that may stop students from riding. One of our main goals is to acquire a few team bikes and helmet, so that students don’t need to own their own bike in order to ride with us. We also hope to use this money to fund all race fees, transportation costs, and lodging at races, especially our national competitions which aren’t funded by the school, and some social events in order to create a strong, welcoming culture within the cycling community.
We believe that cycling allows us to explore our surroundings, while appreciating nature and having fun. We also believe that racing is an aspect of cycling that is important to some, and the opportunity to race should be open to everybody. We have been, and hope to continue, racing at the local and national level, along with riding as a group of both non-racers and racers. Through this project we believe that we can expand these opportunities to more students and continue to provide the resources needed for students to be involved in cycling.

Whether our members have been riding for years, or just started at Middlebury, we can all say that cycling is extremely important to us. There is nothing quite like being able to experience the world from behind your handlebars. Through cycling, we learn discipline and appreciate nature/the environment, while improving our mental and physical health, and we strongly believe that everyone should have equal opportunities to experience this. Through our connection to the environment, we understand the positive impact riding a bike can have on the world around us. Additionally, we value the connection riding bikes gives us to our community and the infrastructure needed to maintain trails. The cyclists on our team have big aspirations, such as the goal of several of our members to bring hope and peace to Afghanistan in the form of mountain biking, but we believe that no goal is too large. We are inspired by the positive effect that cycling can have on community, and we want all students to have the opportunity to experience the same passion that we have towards riding our bikes.
