Middlebury

A network of microphilanthropy that supports Middlebury students.

Women’s empowerment through improved access to sexual education (San Juan, Puerto Rico) During our week in Puerto Rico we will be working with women and transgender people at high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. We will be helping and attending workshops intended to prevent the spread of STIs. PROGRESAH provides a safe haven for a population that is many times marginalized and discriminated in society. We also aim to explore a region of the US that is often underrepresented and plagued by misconceptions by closely examining the history and culture of the area.

Twelve Middlebury students will be traveling to San Juan, Puerto Rico over February break as part of a Middlebury Alternative Break (MAlt) trip. MAlt is a student organization that provides student-designed and student-led service trips for Middlebury College students. MAlt offers opportunities for students to participate in strong direct service that seeks to address needs as determined by a local community partner. MAlt is committed to a needs-blind acceptance policy. As a result, we do extensive fundraising to ensure that participants’ financial needs can be met. We all work together to support one another, which is why this fundraiser is so critical to our efforts.

    To all donors and supporters,

Thank you so much for helping us pass the $2000 mark! We are grateful to each of you for devoting your time and resources, and putting them towards making our project a reality.

We are, however, looking to still fundraise a bit over $1000 and hope that you will choose to keep on supporting us along the rest of our journey. This page will remain open until our formal deadline of January 31st.

As our departure day quickly approaches, we are busy building on the educational foundation we’ve laid out last semester, and are learning as much as we can, both theoretically and practically, to ensure a valuable experience for both our community partner, and our participants.

    Thanks again!

Just donated $25 for Tina Chen!

What a unique and interesting trip you have planned! It’s so refreshing to see students take action on the more “taboo” problems with today’s society. It’s easy to confront, say, environmental issues and take action, but it’s not so easy to tackle an issue like sexual health. I’m sure you’ll all learn so much, and I look forward to hearing about your trip!

Thanks for the encouragement! We are all very excited to be bringing this type of service trip to Middlebury. Our goal is to bring these types of discussions back to campus to confront these “taboo” problems that you mention. We appreciate your support!
