Breaking Through Preconceptions (Cherokee Nation): During our trip to the Cherokee Nation near the Smokey Blue Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina we will immerse ourselves in the culture and traditions of the Cherokee through interacting with the elderly at the Senior Center and tutoring youth at the Recreation Center. We will learn from members of the community about the issues they face as a nation within a nation and take part in an ongoing effort to maintain the cultural land of the Cherokee “where eagles nest and bears still roam.”

During our trip to the Cherokee Nation near the Smokey Blue Mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina we will immerse ourselves in the culture and traditions of the Cherokee through interacting with the elderly at the Senior Center and tutoring youth at the Recreation Center. Twelve Middlebury students will be traveling to the Cherokee Nation over February break as part of a Middlebury Alternative Break (MAlt) trip. MAlt is a student organization that provides student-designed and student-led service trips for Middlebury College students. MAlt offers opportunities for students to participate in strong direct service that seeks to address needs as determined by a local community partner. MAlt is committed to a needs-blind acceptance policy. As a result, we do extensive fundraising to ensure that participants’ financial needs can be met. We all work together to support one another, which is why this fundraiser is so critical to our efforts. MiddSTART is a vital part of our effort to help us fundraise for our trip expenses.

Thank you to everyone who donated to our trip! We met our goal and then some! Any extra money we raised will be going back to MAlt to help make other trips like ours a reality. J-Term is finally ending and we’re excited to be on our way to Tennessee to learn more about the Cherokee community. We couldn’t have gone on this trip with your help! Thank you!

Wow! Thanks for donating to our trip! I can’t believe we’ve almost reached our MiddSTART fundraising goal! We’re coming to the end of our winter vacation and so far we’ve raised $3,447.06! We still have $2,199.75 left to fundraise and a lot of work to do during J-Term! We have grille deliveries lined up, our winter term workshop, and our silent auction! BUT YOU CAN STILL HELP by donating to this page even AFTER we reach our goal! We can’t wait to get back on campus and start working! Happy New Years!!

Wow! You guys are amazing! Thanks so much for donating! Now we’ve fundraised a total of $1,980.00! Sadly, our fundraising goal has jumped again because of airfare prices and we’re now trying to raise $5,646 but thanks to you we only have $3,666 left to go! The morning of 12/01/12 will be our last meeting before heading into finals week and off to break. We’ll be finalizing the rest of our J-term fundraising plan, learning more about Cherokee culture, prepping pamphlets to mail out, and organizing our FIRST FUNDRAISER at the Gamut! We’ll be working hard so if you can lend us a hand by either donating or passing this page on to friends and family that would be great!

Thanks to everyone who donated! Sadly, we lost the Thanksgiving Challenge, but the GOOD NEWS is that with your help we’re $630 into our $4,200 goal! Due to some issues, our total goal has increased a bit, so help us by donating a few extra dollars and asking your friends to donate!

Thanks to everyone who kicked off our MiddSTART fundraising! You guys rock! Outside of MiddStart we have raised $500! Thanks to the Environmental Council for supporting us! Next up on our fundraising list is a Gamut Room Night! We’ll also be sending out letters and pamphlets with out lovely MAlt Cherokee Nation Picture from last year on it (as seen on the right of this page)! Our total fundraising goal is $4000! We’re working hard to meet it so lend us a hand!

    Here are some updates!

The Thanksgiving Challenge: We need at least TEN people to donate to our MiddSTART page! The first MAlt group to reach this goal will win $250 from the MAlt Gift Fund! You can help us win by donating a couple dollars on our page!

Other notes: Tomorrow we’ll be having our third meeting of the semester! We have some great things planned out for this meeting and some great news! Stay tuned to find out what it is!
